Oh Deutschland, Ich vermisse dich!

Oh, where to even begin.

Germany, Germany, Germany, Germany.

It's been a year to date since I left Germany and my love for the country (now bordering on obsession) has only continued to grow with each passing day. And as the title says, Oh Germany, I miss you!

I miss everything.

and everyone.

all.

the.

time.

I miss the wonderful family I lived with and the meals, conversations, laughter and music we shared. Even the sometimes chaotic and stressful times that had me going on my nightly chocolate walks! I miss walking to the supermarkt or to the U-bahnstation for a döner kebab in the rain, with my umbrella blowing and bending every which way. Getting lost and walking in circles around cities in the dark and even having conversations with strangers in train stations when all I wanted was to be left alone.

I find it so interesting how places become home in such short periods of time and continue to hold pieces of your heart long after you've left.

That's what Karlsruhe will always be for me.

I think it may have been my second week in Europe when I spent a weekend traveling to see my niece in Sweden. And on my return, I can still vividly remember the emotions that came over me as the train pulled into the hauptbahnhof (station) of the city that would be my home for the next six months. Sheer relief and joy to finally be back home.

Isn't it strange how so often we don't realise how much we appreciate something or someone until much later?

It's been difficult acclimating to being back in Alaska over the past year. But the past few months have become easier as I've settled into a new position at work and I've had alot of time to reflect. I've learned to enjoy where I am in life and looking back on the pasthas given me more perspective and an even greater appreciation for the past year and a half. And I am so incredibly thankful for my time in Germany and for all of the kind and amazing people I met there. I'm hoping to return in the fall and reconnect with friends and see even more of the country.

I've been wanting to write this post for a while now, but of course... procrastination. So here I am just finishing this up a few minutes before midnight. But as long as the publish date is the twenty second, it still counts, right?!

Well, that's all for now. Thank you for reading, and I promise not to wait another nine months before posting again!

Delightfully yours,

Elsie
